Romanian is the main and national language. English is not widely spoken thus making it challenging to communicate with the locals.

Romanian leu is the currency used in Romania. The plural for leu is lei and is pronounced as "lay". RON is the abbreviation for Romanian leu. Visa and Mastercard credit cards are also accepted however it is recommended to call ahead and advise the credit card company of travel plans to avoid hassle while on vacation.


Do I need a visa to travel to Romania?

Yes, Although Canadian and American citizens do not require a visa for stays up to 90 days.


When is the best time to travel to Romania?

The best time to visit Romania if you are looking for warm and pleasant weather would be from May until September. The summer months which are mainly from June until August can be hotter in terms of temperature. The city of Transylvania is popular in the Fall especially around Halloween. January and February are great months for anyone who wants to enjoy winter activities as the weather can be quite cool, sometimes dropping below 0 degrees Celsius.


How is the transportation within Romania?

Many of the larger cities in Romania have public transportation including buses and trams. Taxis are also widely available. Bucharest, the capital of Romania, is the only city with an underground subway system. For those who own a car in Romania, they drive on the right side of the road. Bucharest, Cluj-Napoca, Brasov, Timisoara and Lasi have Uber services available.

Romania is said to be a family friendly destination as it is filled with many natural surroundings in addition to several towns that are rich with medieval history and castles. This destination is not very crowded with tourists compared to some of the other countries in Europe and this factor alone is often appealing to families with younger children. Many cities and towns in Romania have plenty of family friendly activities, attractions and restaurants.
